WiFi

In the marine sector, WiFi is primarily known for providing Internet access using routers on boats. Wifi is based on the 802.11 bgn standard and uses 2.4 GHz frequencies. With 802.11 ac, frequencies with 5 GHz and 6 GHz are also possible, which enable higher data rates. Modern plotters can transmit some information to mobile devices and use WiFi for this. Mostly NMEA0183 telegrams are transmitted to mobile apps. However, there are also completely independent proprietary solutions that are incompatible with other transmission technologies.

In the DIY area, WiFi is often used to connect sensor data, since modern microcontrollers already contain all the components for WiFi transmission. NMEA0183 over WiFi overcomes NMEA0183 transmission speed limitations.
